Where Can Occupational Therapists Work?5/12/2021 Occupational therapists can work in a variety of settings. These settings can be grouped into four main categories: home and community, institutions, industry and business, and government.
Home and community settings include at home care programs, private practices, health boards, day programs, community mental health centers, clinics (health clinics, rehabilitation clinics, etc.), halfway houses, groups homes, vocational programs, community action groups, and workers compensation boards. Institutions include hospitals, care facilities (short or long term, care homes, nursing homes, etc.), rehab centers, correctional institutions, research centers, and schools (elementary schools, secondary schools, universities and colleges, etc. Industry and business includes insurance companies (like ICBC), rehabilitation companies, architectural firms, other corporations. Government includes all areas related to or regarding the following: health promotion, disability prevention/management, accessibility, vocational/health planning and international rehabilitation program development. There are many places for occupational therapists to work, which will allow you as an OT to find the best fitting place of practice for yourself. Some OTs may want to be more independent, and might opt for opening their own health clinic, whereas others may want to work with kids and work in an elementary school, etc. The sources used in this blog posting are mainly for BC occupational therapists, but different regions are likely to have very similar places of work.
